print ads for analysis

Reading images and products

toolkit to answering question 3:

key concepts - culture, communication, identity, value, representation, code, power, context

communications model - sender > message > receiver
(message is different depending on the sender and receiver
for example: Beethoven's Ode to Joy is used by communists and fascists

things that affect the receiver - age (adverts that are for kids/adults)
                                                  - social class
                                                  - gender (toys r u aisles pink & blue)
                                                  - culture/ ethnicity
Angela Barry tells of 3 representations of non-white:
1 dependant (needs help-charity adverts)
2 entertainer (Beyonce, Usain Bolt have to have an identifier cant just be talented)
3 troublemaker (stereotype -MTV, ill manors)

representation- how is the world portrayedin texts through words and pictures
stereotypes - a version of representation usually negative
genre - type of text
conventions - rules about the ways these types of text are organised
mode of address - how the text talks to us

process approach looks at what the sender meant and any problems which prevent this 'meaning' being transmitted  BARRIERS

semiotic approach looks at signs and codes which are used to get the message across

purpose of adverts are to sell commodities and the ideology behind it.

the product says something about us:
semiotic - paradigm, anchorage, denotation, myth, ideology, icon/symbol, sign/code, motivated/arbitrary, signifier, syntagm

process - sender, message, receiver, barrier, register, intention, effect, feedback, semantic/psychological/physical

its another news story.. In Uganda

ok so I am a bit obsessed with news articles but this one was so outrageous, I had to post something

the live broadcast of President Yoweri Museveni signing the Anti-Homosexual Bill.

have we taken a step back in time??!!!

this new law in Uganda has meant its illegal to be gay or lesbian now and that you can recieve a life sentence for it.

furthermore if youre not gay but know someone who is then you can been sent to jail as well.

I just cant believe people still think that being gay is evil and that human rights cannot be upheld in seemingly a modern country. The President's argument is that the Western World is having too much influence on his people and that this is a good thing that will help the country.

This is one of the most upsetting issues in today's society and I can only hope that this will be abolished soon and education will prevent this from happening again.

the hilarious cause of the flooding in the Soutwest of the UK...

no, its not the jet stream and its constant unpredictability for weather in Britain that caused the horrific flooding.. its gay marriage! -- http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/jan/19/ukip-councillor-gay-people-spiritual-disease-pray-healed-david-silvester

UKIP has an occasional good idea that makes me think they would be suitable for election to replace Tories, but then one of them opens their mouth and the world realised Nigel Farage is leading a bunch of (homophobic, sexist, racist) dinosaurs..

but i fully support the campaign to get 'Its raining men' into the charts. what a way to retaliate :)

Marina and the diamonds new music video

I dont know what its called but theres a scene where marina is clothed and is surrounded by 3 topless men..

Apparently, she has been criticised and laughed at for doing it and yet its exactly the same as robin thicke's video.

So its nornal for girls to be naked on film but a taboo when guys do the same
